CHICAGO -- Chicago police Monday urged holiday shoppers to be wary of their wallets and packages in the week before Christmas.
"With five shopping days left until Christmas, our attention to safety and security can sometimes get lost in the hustle and bustle of walking, driving and shopping for those last-minute items," police Bureau of Investigative Services First Deputy Chief Hiram Grau said.
At an afternoon news conference at police headquarters, 3510 S. Michigan Ave., Grau urged shoppers to beware of thieves who are "constantly looking for that holiday bargain."
Most importantly, shoppers should put all valuables and packages in the trunk of the car, and not leave them in plain sight, Grau said.
He also urged shoppers to not carry an excessive number of credit cards, and always keep credit card company phone numbers handy in case the cards are lost or stolen.
In light of recent scams, police urged drivers not to get out of their car if they are bumped by another vehicle. The driver should keep all windows closed and doors locked and tell the other driver that police have been notified.
Thieves have been using this scam to steal purses and other valuables while drivers inspect their cars for damage.
Grau also urged residents to not open their home doors to strangers, and call 911 when in doubt.
In recent weeks, there have been several home invasions on the Northwest Side in which residents have opened their doors to robbers.
During the holidays, police also offered the following safety tips:
